Akl'iiya Quatza-rij (aq-illa quatza ri)

Post by Nick123q23 » 30 May 2017, 10:03

"My Elders, I have a humble request.."

Byond ID: Nick123q23

Marine Name (so we know who you are, if you play alien mostly, state that here): Medea Laporte is my newest character for the USS Almayer. I play both marine and alien, as I believe that a good predator player should be acquainted with both major sides

Name of the character you want whitelisted (The name your predator will use. This must match your in-game predator name): Akl'iiya Quatza-Rij (aq-illa quatza ri)

Are you familiar with the Predator Code Of Honor? Yes, I should hope so! I've made atleast three other predator applications at this point, and maybe I'll have to do four or five if I'm not careful this time. If I'm not familiar with the Code of Honor by the sheer number of times I've read it and checked it for updates, no one is!

Character background (A very BRIEF description of your predators background):

Predator. Yautja. Hish. Hunter. Demon. These are all the names of one of the three remaining dominant species in the milky way galaxy, and perhaps the most intriguing of the three. Few have had contact with them and lived to spread the myths associated with them. Fewer still have collected an understanding of the enigmatic Predators.
For unlike humanity, the Yautja never settled. Their civilization has never progressed past the primitive hunter-gatherer stage. Yet in defiance to the hardships Humanity faced, the Yautja continue to thrive in this stage of civilization, with a level of technology far in advance to anything even the most well-equipped force in the galaxy can muster, even visiting humanity in their infancy to construct their massive pyramids.

Yet their technology is not the most fascinating aspect of their race, it is their culture. And this is where the heart of their civilization lies, and the entire race's purpose in life according to themselves.
The Hunt. When the Predators have a conflict among their race, wish to impress a mate, or even simply for fun and sport, they descend on worlds alone or in hunting packs, their sole goal is to seek out worthy beasts on the planet they are on, and fight them for their heads.
You see, the Yautja remain in a tribal state. They operate on a caste system, where one can only advance in social status by having more kills, honor and 'blood' than another.
They all live in massive clans, each with it's own fleet of hunters and hunting vessels.

The Predators' hunts have caused them to clash with the deadly Xenomorphs, or 'Serpents' to the yautja, Humanity, and even the long-dead Engineers whos mastery of life was so that they may have created Humanity, the Xenomorphs, and various other creatures to use as bio-weapons in great interstellar wars, one of which may have even been fought with the Yautja!

My character, Akl'iiya Quatza-Rij, is a proud member of the Yautja. A youngblood, fresh from her hunter trials. Her father had been a prestigious Elite and held her up to such high expectations she thought she would certainly fail. Yet she, like her stubborn kin, has kept fighting on in her trials and training, as she knows no other alternative.

Though her ambitions have been difficult to reach, she has every intention of bringing honor to her clan with the help of her faith to Paya, the Conquering Warrior and Yautja god of the Hunt.

Her quest to become blooded and finally join a proper hunt goes as follows.
► Show Spoiler

After her encounter with the Dutch's Dozen fireteam, she has come to doubt the perfection of the serpents, and wishes to observe and hunt the most dangerous game of which are challenging enough to turn the tables on the hunter. From her wounds and experience during her trials, she has learned to be more perceptive, more patient than her prey.
For if she overlooks the tiniest detail, it may be the last time she ever does.

How do you intend to play your predator (as in, describe HOW you will act/play your predator. This will weigh HEAVILY and frequently breaking from this MAY result in removal)?
Space Station 13 isn't a typical game where one side wins and the other loses. Rather, it is a roleplaying game, much like the D&D tabletop games of old. The goal is to create the best story you can by each player playing as one of the story's characters. This goes double for CM, as most people see it only as a pseudo-FPS where they must win at all costs.
Predators are not the main characters in the story of CM. They're a wildcard element that provide for special encounters for small numbers of marines and aliens. The game can be played without them, and indeed, they don't show up for most rounds.
But when they do show up, they make the round special.
Suddenly, you have a third force to deal with, slowly picking off your fellow marines or your hive-sisters indiscriminately.
In the chaos of battle, the hunters create their arenas, dueling the strongest they can find in their quest for the most dangerous game.

I've made comparisons from Predators to the Antagonists of traditional SS13 servers, especially the Baystation philosophy of, "The purpose of an Antagonist is to make the round more interesting for everyone, and avoid hogging all the roleplay interactions and enjoyment for themselves." This is how I view the Yautja Hunters, they break up the boring redundancy of the round by skulking in and creating new scenarios. To do this, they need to be flexible and adapt to each round they participate in.

It wouldn't make sense both ICly and OOCly for a Predator to especially target one side or another. They want to keep their sport alive so that they can keep hunting. Complete eradication of the Marines or the Xenomorphs wouldn't be in character for them. They don't want either side to be victorious. On the OOC side of things, it would be completely unfair for one side to have to deal with the predators while the other side is completely spared.

Why should we whitelist you? Since my last application, I've changed significantly in the SS13 community. I know I'm not perfect, nor is anyone else (the number of denied applications I have certainly attest to that), but I strive to help each community I participate in.

Each server I join, I want to make that server better not for just me, but for everyone of my fellow players. I brainstorm and actively participate in the Suggestion threads, discuss lore, the future of the servers as a whole, and devote a large amount of my time to playing my favorite servers. My new attitude has even lead to me becoming an admin and whitelist manager of the Warhammer 40k conversion, Archangel station.

I go out of my way to help new players as I see them, I'm not irritated by baldies, I want to introduce them to the game and help them, and anyone really, become a better player.

Especially I've been hanging around a lot on the official Discord channel. ElDefaultio, Bird in a Box, Fresh, and many others I've interacted with there have inspired me to try to become an exemplar player and contribute to the community of Colonial Marines.

I want to contribute here. I want to see how the predators work within the many stories our rounds create, and work with other predator players to forge a fantastic experience for anyone lucky or unlucky enough to come across a Hunter. As it is today, Predator players are either worshiped in hopes of gaining favor with them, or disliked and viewed as an elitist clique where only the most influential community leaders with special deals with staff have a chance of entering the "secret club"

Some Predator players even throw away their quality entirely after their application is accepted, dancing with xenos, 'memeing' around IC and generally being disliked by those seeing them. I aim to improve my roleplaying quality over time even after I'm accepted, and the years following that.

It's my hope that with time, perhaps through my efforts and the efforts of others, that view will change and people will appreciate predators for the work they give back to the community by the people playing them and their character's actions ingame. Rather than being a salt-mine, the community will savor each predator round as a unique experience every day, and that by the end of the rounds I play in, there are far more stories of brave prey escaping from the Hunter's clutches, or an honorable duel ending in mutual respect.

I'm also a massive lore and fluff geek and I pride myself on knowing every little bit about every fictional thing that interests me, like the Yautja.
Though I've only ever played the AVP games and haven't even seen the movies, so make of that what you will.

Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason (we will check, and lies may result in immediate denial)? Not to my knowledge, I recently requested my notes only to discover that I don't actually have any notes. I believe myself to be a clean player, though I often carry a 9mm pistol sidearm with me whenever I play military police.

Are you currently banned from any other servers and if so, why? I am not currently banned from any server to my knowledge. I make it a point to obey the rules of any and all places I visit to make life easier for everyone, even if I disagree with a rule, I bring up my concern in formal channels instead of disobeying.

Do you understand that any player - donor or otherwise - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our rules or disobey the Predator Code of Honor? I understand that any player, donor or otherwise, could have their whitelist status revoked should they break Colonial Marine server rules or violate the Predator Code of Honor.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time out of their day to look at my application, I hope Akl'iiya's story entertained you, and I definitely hope to see you on the hunting grounds!

I found the thread rather intriguing and actually rather good and easy to read. It also shows that you are here to make there be more roleplay for everyone and better your own experience, and for all this I give you my +1.

+1, you seem to have a nice grasp of the lore and proper writting skills (Somehow that's rare, saddly). I don't have much to comment other than the fact you seem like the kind of player I want to give a shot in the role and I expect good things out of you being accepted.

I don't quite have the time to write a full review, but the overall thing seemed worthy of my approval on your app. Good luck.

EDIT: As bolter stated though, your pred may have a bit of an elite-trip on some points.

CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

As a lightly-experienced predator, I just want to inform you of a few things to really think about should you become a predator.

1, RPing with other factions is dangerous and hard, hence why it seems that predators aren't QUITE the best RPers when dealing with people outside their faction, let alone marines who know how useful predator armor is in a fight against xenos... at least until the tacklespam starts...

and 2, gameplay in general is based on failure and frustration. You will struggle, you will make mistakes, and like myself, you might even do something you'll regret later... More than once. It takes a long time to get the hang of things, and even then, elites still die in the most humiliating ways. Get used to using that pred bomb, because you are going to be using it a lot not just to retain honor, but to protect your people's tech from theft.

I honestly don't know you all that well, but you seem to have put forth a lot of effort in your app, so I'm on the fence. I mainly wanted to input some facts so that, if you ever do get accepted, you don't make the mistakes and assumptions I had when I started out.

You will be weak, scared and often alone. If you can pull off some good RP as a predator, good on you. But for the most part...

Prepare to die... A lot.
Taking a good, long break... Ahh, who am I kidding?

Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

I understand. From what I've seen lately predators aren't the overpowered salt machines they're hyped up to be all the time. That's okay, neither are marines or aliens.

And when I do inevitably screw up something, well, losing is just part of the story.

You know what, I am gonna come back from the dead to say I trust Nick as a predator. I have known the guy for a few months now and he has shown to me overall that he is a pretty level headed and mature guy from time to time. Every now and again he can take a bit to get something done but it gets done from what I have seen. I also think that the overall backstory for his pred is pretty nice in regards of lore and grammar so go ahead and take my +1

If you get accepted prepare to die.

I mean, if you got fucking SAS to come back from the dead you are doing something right. Your pred app makes mine seem... puny, you obviously know a lot, and I saw you a lot in game before. Very enjoyable read, and even though my vote... really barely counts I think you FULLY can handle this role. I hope to see you in it! +1!

I'm just going to say this, your story was a bit weak to me. It wasn't related to actually conveying any real notion of what your predator's like, and was mostly just them running around and killing three Xenos alone as a Youngblood, then defeating a Praetorian and two soldiers. The little bit at the end was just the usual "Will be smarter than other hunters and be smart about hunting prey", yada yada.

I can't say I've seen you around often, especially your Marine character, but that may have been my two month exam break.

You've got the right idea, but your foundations are very weak. The best you have to offer is how nice and rule-abiding you are. That's not just what we're looking for here. You have okay forum activity, and you seem like you have the heart. All I want really at this point is proof that you can handle the stress of the role that comes with the package.

I can't +1 this app. The story was too weak. This was nearly a -1, but you've got enough people vouching for you that I'll give you a neutral.

Thanks for your criticism, Bolter. Yeah, I could've put more of Akl'iiya's personality into the actual story and I regret not doing so. The details about her are sprinkled around at the beginning and end instead of throughout the whole story. There wasn't a lot of character development for her because I elected for her to be the only yautja on the planet, as her clan's custom of making youngbloods undergo their trials alone. So she had noone to interact with besides the Praetorian and the mercenary leader, which went about as well as most predator - prey hostile interactions go.

Still, I could've included a section where she has a conversation with her Elder or father, and I'll keep this in mind for my writing in the future.

Despite Akl'iiya's impressive killcount, I made an effort to show that she wasn't getting off scot-free. She nearly dies twice during her experience on Blackgate, and by the end of her trial she would've bled out and dropped completely dead if she didn't have ridiculous healing shards.

On coping with the stress of the role?
I've played enough XO and Queen to know how it feels to have a faction's whole round resting on your shoulders. There's a lot of stress involved, especially if you do something wrong and everyone suffers because of it. But afterward, you learn from your mistake and continue on because you don't know if anyone's going to be able to replace you if you give up.

Predators, I imagine, deal with this same stress but with everybody in the whole round, seeing as their actions can affect such a wide range of people.

It's going to take me awhile to learn all the ins and outs of the Hunter's equipment, what the Hunter feasibly can and can't do, and the best way to impact the round without making it worse for everyone.

I'm going to be the first to say that I will fuck this up a few times, but I will learn from each and every single mistake I make so that it does not happen in the future.

I would also like to see you get a bit deeper into your predator's personality. You did a good job covering your knowledge of predators in the backstory, but for a separate piece (or for your next application, if you don't make it): Consider covering something a bit more unconventional, an angle that can bring out more complicated emotions from your predator, more than just writing about the fight. A focus on your predator, how she thinks and why she does what she does. It's not something I see much in some applications, and even less often in-game. Don't think of it like "how can I make a predator interesting", remember that you're writing a person, not just a stereotype. Get messy with it, make her someone you would want to read about and relate to, not just someone you want to show to others.

Despite the criticisms about the story, I think this is probably one of the more interesting applications I've seen, at least in terms of intention and tone. I'd really like to see another predator with a focus on experiences for others and making the hunt interesting, more than just focusing on their trophies (though that's still pretty important, and I'd advise not being too passive.) Mind you, that's definitely not easy to do; it's nice to think about in theory, but in reality, being a predator is a struggle to survive if you're not careful. I'd like to see if you can do it, not just say it. Definitely take the opportunity to observe as many predators as you can if you haven't already, watch how each one of them plays.

I agree with you that some predators don't take their application to heart after being accepted, and the quality tends to stagnate. It'd be nice to see you take this in the other direction and actually improve over time. Please take all of this into consideration, and have my +1.

Thank you for your feedback, Sailor Dave!

I have a character sheet somewhere detailing how I'll be behaving while playing as my CM characters, Akl'iiya included. What I don't include in here(or will include with the next application, if luck fails me.), I will certainly try to bring out her personality in-game. That's where the core of interesting interactions happen, isn't it?

Don't worry, Akl'iiya will certainly be out for blood, though her curiosity may get the best of her.

I've been observing every predator I could in the past few weeks, especially Renomaki (poor, poor reno.) who posted here earlier. I've come to see how difficult it is to just survive as a predator, much less participate in the Hunt. Especially now that they aren't keeping up with all of the rapid updates by our hard-working dev staff.

Still, the difficulty doesn't dissuade me.
(even if I'm not the most robust player)

I am fully willing to try and fulfill this role, despite grievous injury to my character and quite possibly to my mental health.

*Rubs chin thinking a bit* Hmmm, I've read your application and I just woke up and I'm a bit drowsy. Anyway, I'm a little confused while it doesn't say you HAVE to make a backstory a backstory. It kinda does nudge you in that direction considering about all the other applications have done that exactly however it really doesn't matter. You know your stuff, however I recommend watching Predator 1 and 2. Both are good in their own but also provide a good deal of lore.
Anyway, the story doesn't really provide much about your predator so I'm very concerned on that aspect, also your clan's traditions obviously aren't laid out flat but typically trialed youngbloods are sent in a pack of three. However you obviously know this considering you said their clan's tradition. I'm pointing this out to show you care enough about actually knowing the lore. Also I'm confused on how you intend to hunt, I'm very sure you intend to hunt very standard considering there's little to no actual character in the backstory so please elaborate on this.
I'm sticking with neutral until you can elaborate on these issues.

Thanks for giving me your feedback, Shyshadow. I'm sorry about what happened earlier, hope you don't get too depressed.

I would really love to watch the Predator movies at some point, yeah.
Her clan's traditions stem from the fact that most of the time when you see a predator, it's a loner and takes on twenty prey at the same time and wins. They like to train their juveniles hard so that they're close to that level before they go out on a true hunt and possibly dishonor the clan. Though, as I mentioned the high failure rate, a consequence of this tradition is that many of their youngbloods just flat out die and don't make it out of their trials. (alluding to the ooc difficulty of applying for a predator here)

If you've seen my previous application, Akl'iiya is a further developed and more yautja-like version of Ajn'y.

While she isn't one to underestimate the Xenomorph Serpents, she's been ambushed by humans before and have seen what they're capable of. She personally believes Humans are more dangerous prey than the Serpents, and has a profound interest in them, though she won't shy away from taking the head of an alien if she has the opportunity.

In practice, though, I'll likely be playing as a standard run-of-the-mill predator, experimenting with different combinations of equipment, strategies and hunting tactics until I finally know what works and then I'll be able to start making my own style different from everybody else.
It's difficult to establish a way of hunting and then stick to it when you don't know a lot about how predators work in-game, or will work in-game. Though the mystery is certainly charming.

Like I said in how I intend to play my predator, a Hunter needs to be adaptable to their environment and each round they participate in. It all depends on the map, the two sides, and what Akl'iiya wants to acomplish on her hunt dictates what kind of equipment she'll have and how she'll behave. More often than not she'll try to be a jack-of-all-trades.

That's fine by me, though I had wished you would have added that to the application itself. I'm not really orientated with you in-game though you seem capable of this role, your character adapts to their environment and situation quickly and with haste. Very standard but as long as standard is done right it's fine. +1.
Also about me getting denied, TBH I'm kinda glad it got denied. That application really wasn't my best work and I'm more then glad to make another application, though I gotta wait another two months. Man does that make me anxious.

That's why it's good for people to ask valuable questions such as yours.

I appreciate your support.

I'm rather impressed by your intentions and remembering the Baystation philosophy. I originally came from Baystation 12, and that philosophy has eroded on me due to the competitive nature of Colonial Marines. In my opinion that is exactly how the Predator role should be played as. An antagonist role whose main goal is to make the round as a whole more interesting for both sides.

Lt. Elizabeth Owens: The lady who won't stop badgering.

Thank you for your feedback, Garrison!

Colonial marines is trying to be at the high end of the Medium RP scale, and it's certainly succeeding there.
I too came from bay, which is why I refer to that philosophy.
Many people don't care about the story, only about if they get a certain number of kills or win or not.
While I still think balance is very important, I don't really care which side wins or looses, as long as the story of the round unfolds to be a grand one and involves as many people as possible.

This is actually one of the more unique backstories I've seen, and Nick is certainly knowledgeable of how Predators work. I'd love to see 'em.
